3M Ames is a part of the 3M Abrasive Systems Division under the umbrella of our Industrial and Transportation Business. In our Ames facility, we manufacture abrasive (sandpaper) products in thousands of different shapes and sizes, from sheets to discs. Many of the products we produce are used in the woodworking and metal working industries as well as the automotive aftermarket and home improvement industries.
The Ames, IA plant is seeking a Plant Chemist and Product Engineer to provide technical and project leadership supporting the materials characterization laboratory and product engineering. Specific focus will be on characterization of raw materials and intermediates as well as materials for dual sourcing. In addition, this position has product engineering responsibility for products made and converted in the Ames plant. This is an exciting and challenging technical position.
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
* Maintain the material characterization laboratory.
* Analyze and interpreting the results of thermo, thermogravimetric, rheological, microscopy, and spectroscopic evaluation of materials
* Drive dual sourcing efforts by identifying materials, characterize, and evaluate
* Assist in troubleshooting production problems through characterization of suspect materials
* Provide product support in terms of cost, quality, and service
* Responsibilities may include cost reduction projects and capacity expansion
* This position would be responsible for communicating and working closely with R&D, marketing, management and factory personnel
* Initiating, leading and executing activities within new product introduction system
* As products move through New Product Introduction process, this person would be responsible for project leadership, manufacturing process development, factory cost/quality input and manufacturing scale-up support
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree or higher in Science or Engineering from an accredited university
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with the use of Lean Six Sigma tools and methodology
* Solid understanding of design of experiments and statistical analysis
* Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science
* Knowledge of polyurethane, acrylate, formaldehyde, and epoxy chemistry
* Experience with a wide range of analytical equipment
* Strong communications skills, both oral and written
* Previous experience leading cross functional teams
* Demonstrated experience leading projects that resulted in process improvements
